$3,000 in Cash Prizes. Plus 1 Year of Script Development Support for two Winners each season. For screenwriters who want help to finish their scripts.

Want to transform that rough idea, treatment, or first draft into a polished screenplay that’s ready for production?

Of course, you do!

But finding the time, dedication, and expert help when you need it isn’t exactly easy, is it?

That’s where our Script Development Fund comes in.

We understand that many aspiring writers struggle to find the time to write whilst supporting themselves and their families. That’s why we’re offering Two (2) Writers the chance to win $3,000 in Cash Prizes + 12 months of Free Script Development.

We've already helped launch the careers of 100+ writers, including deals with Sony, Blumhouse, Film4, and Hulu, and now we want to extend that help to the writers who need it most.

The cash prizes awarded to the two Winners of this contest are intended to finance greater freedom for writers, whether that’s taking time off from work, attending a writer’s retreat, engaging childminders, or any other way the writer sees fit that will help them find dedicated time to write.

We also get that writing can sometimes be an isolating experience, so our Head of Education here at Shore Scripts will be there for you - offering Script Development for one year to both Winners; providing ongoing coverage and feedback to help you create the best screenplay possible.

It’s not just about getting the script ready; it’s about getting the writer ready too, so at the end of the year, both Winners’ scripts will be reviewed and if the time is right, the Winners will work with our Writer Development Manager to send their scripts out to members of our Industry and Directors roster.

The Fund welcomes submissions from screenwriters from around the world. We accept short Treatments for features or TV series, or the first 10 pages of a longer script that the writer is currently working on.

Treatments and scripts must be in English. Scripts must be personal specs and not screenplays for projects that you have been commissioned and paid to write by a production company or producer.

The Script Development Fund offers you an opportunity to transform your story idea into a screenplay that will make people take notice of you and your work.

Shore Scripts does not seek to obtain any rights over your script at any time.

Entering its 8th year, Festival of Cinema NYC will be taking place from August 2nd - 11th, 2024. The festival welcomes filmmakers and attendees to the legendary Regal UA Midway theater in Forest Hills Queens, New York, with additional programming that includes workshops and panels at the Queens Library at Forest Hills.

Festival of Cinema NYC is a fully rounded film festival that looks to nurture and help develop the careers of emerging filmmakers and writers. The festival particularly seeks un-produced scripts and offers the top finalists a chance at participating in a staged reading of their work in front of a live audience.

Top prizes include a pitch meeting as well as a consultation with a film distributor.

Scripts of all lengths, genres and subjects are accepted. Whether your film is a drama, comedy, horror, sci-fi, fantasy, documentary, experimental, LGBTQ, animation, even if it tackles social issues - we want to show it! Our Opening Night, Closing Night, and special screening events (like our Midnight Madness and Underground Films presentations) are all selected from the very best submissions we receive. Plus, every filmmaker that submits a film will automatically receive a one-year subscription to Videomaker Digital Magazine, a leading subscription service that focuses on guiding independent filmmakers with online tutorials and publications (a $20 value). All selected filmmakers get VIP passes that allow entry into all our screenings, events, and parties.

Festival of Cinema NYC is the only film festival in New York City to be supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, The New York State Council on the Arts, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. Support from these nationally recognized foundations is a testament to the hard work our team has put into advancing the careers of filmmakers. Whether they are new to the industry with their first film, or a filmmaker with several films under their belt, our mission is to help these emerging filmmakers get more exposure and media attention, reach larger audiences, and meet other industry professionals who can help further their career.

As an IMDB qualifying festival who has consistently landed on FilmFreeway's Top 100 reviewed list, Festival of Cinema NYC has quickly risen to become New York City's go to festival for the best in Independent Film. Our goal is to bring purpose back to film festivals and make it a platform where filmmakers facing challenges can get their work seen and ultimately picked up for distribution. The incredible PR team works around the clock to ensure a large attendance at each screening. In addition, every filmmaker is given a post screening Q&A and a chance to interact with attendees and attending industry professionals.

Our festival’s growing reputation of top-notch independent films has consistently attracted more distributors every year, making it a possibility to interact with distributors directly! One of the key components to Festival of Cinema NYC's success is making sure each filmmaker and their film get the proper attention and publicity that they deserve. Our publicity department works diligently to ensure that filmmakers receive coverage in news outlets and local media. Filmmakers at the festival have had their films featured in various news publications around Queens and New York City, including the New York Times, the NY Daily News, the NY Post, the Queens Chronicle, CBSN and NY1 News on Spectrum cable. Attending filmmakers each get a Q&A following their screening, giving them the chance to engage with audiences.

Additionally, Festival of Cinema NYC hosts panels, workshops and seminars that strongly appeal to filmmakers and attendees seeking further insight into the independent film industry. Presenters have included Seed & Spark, SAG-AFTRA, and invited guest speakers. Seminars have included topics such as film distribution, how to build a publicity campaign, and how to raise funding for your project.

Festival of Cinema NYC is a competitive festival that honors the submissions with awards in 17 categories. Every film and script selected is eligible for an award. Past jury members have included writer/director Dito Montiel; Anna Garduno, Executive Producer at Netflix; Amy Peters, Emmy award winner; Doug LeClaire, founder of Asbury Shorts USA; Isil Bagdadi, president of distribution at Cavu Pictures; and David Josh Lawrence, head of acquisitions at Glass House Pictures. Winners are handed a beautiful custom statuette as well as prizes being offered from some of our amazing sponsors. Among this year’s prizes, filmmakers can walk away with a distribution consultation, and a 1-hour sound mixing session with Emmy Award winning sound studio Silver Sound. The top 10 script finalist in the un-produced script category will receive a 1-month membership to STAGE 32's writer's room, with the winner given a pitch meeting with a producer of their choice through the STAGE 32 Network.

Winners Notified:
Jun 20, 2024
Turn your calling card script into an attention-grabbing short film with our $15,000 cash production grant!

As much as we love to read scripts, too many excellent shorts never progress beyond the written word, which is why we established the Shore Scripts Short Film Fund to help take those compelling stories off the page and onto the screen.

Many of our previous 19 funded short films have played at some of the top film festivals in the world, including Sundance, Tribeca, BFI London, Austin, Cannes, Encounters, and Palm Springs. They’ve even won BAFTA’s! Those writers have gone on to gain representation, sold screenplays, and been staffed on Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, & BBC shows as a direct result of winning and producing their shorts with us.

New projects are funded each season, offering screenwriters and filmmakers the fantastic opportunity to finance and produce their short scripts with a $15,000 cash grant towards production or finishing funds. It’s one of the single best ways to showcase your creative talent, receive festival exposure, and open doors within the industry – so what’s stopping you?!

Here's the lowdown:

Grand Prize Winner - A Cash Grant of $15,000 and support from Shore Scripts to take your screenplay through pre-production, production, post, and distribution. Plus, free camera equipment rental from ARRI Rental for the duration of production (some restrictions may apply). On top of that, our winner will receive a Film Festival Strategy Package with Tribeca programmer, filmmaker, and Academy member, KIMBERLEY BROWNING.

2nd Place Winner - A Cash Prize of $1,000 and script development with Shore Scripts.

Both Winners will connect with two-time Oscar-nominated producer MARIA GRACIA TURGEON for development, production, and career guidance. Both Winners will also have the opportunity to have their scripts circulated to select members of our Industry Roster and Directors; and will receive a free 30-minute consultation from our new partner Seed & Spark.

Top 5 Finalists – will receive feedback on their scripts from one of our esteemed Judges. And, new this season, one US-based writer will get on a call with Natalie Gergely (VP, Scripted at Gunpowder & Sky) and one European-based writer will get on a call with Kirstie MacDonald (Creative Director of TV at FilmNation) to discuss their projects and receive career advice.

Top 15 Finalists – will have the opportunity to have their scripts circulated to select members of our Industry Roster and Directors, plus an invitation to our private Facebook group where we regularly host Q&As with screenwriting and industry professionals.

The Spring Season of the 2024 Short Film Fund will award production financing or finishing funds for one new short film and our Award-Winning Judges including filmmakers, festival programmers, and former Fund winners will decide this season’s Grand Prize Winner.

As a new writer, getting a script produced is a transformative career milestone that can lead to new opportunities and help you pitch your stories to producers, managers, and agents. Our Short Film Fund was established to commission production projects from emerging screenwriters and create another avenue for them to get their work seen by the industry.

The Fund accepts submissions from writers, directors, and producers from around the world. We are open to working with directors attached to the project, even first-timers. However, if you are a standalone writer, Shore Scripts can assist in attaching a director and team to the project, if needed. We also accept submissions from produced shorts seeking finishing funds.

The Fund accepts scripts for narrative short films (live-action & animation), web series pilots, half-hour TV pilots, and proof-of-concept shorts for TV series and features.

Screenplays must be in English; however, the production can be filmed in any country and any language (English subtitles in the finished film are required).

We can offer end-to-end support from script development to post-production and film festival distribution.

We do not seek to obtain any rights over your script or the finished film at any time. For those who take the funding, we ask for a production company credit and access to promotional material for the resulting short film to promote the project and Fund in the future.

READ MORE ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE SHORT FILM FUND: https://www.shorescripts.com/historyoftheshortfilmfund/

Plus, every writer who enters receives a FREE 18-page booklet on HOW TO GET YOUR SCREENPLAY PRODUCED.
